What is Bronchiectasis?

Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung disease in which the large- and medium-sized airways become enlarged, leading to mucus buildup and an increased risk of infections. It can develop due to severe respiratory infections, immune system disorders, or genetic conditions such as cystic fibrosis.

Common causes of bronchiectasis include:

  • Severe lung infections (pneumonia, tuberculosis, whooping cough)
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Autoimmune or immune deficiency disorders
  • Aspiration of food or liquids into the lungs
  • Repeated exposure to environmental toxins or pollutants

Symptoms of Bronchiectasis

The primary symptom of bronchiectasis is a chronic productive cough. As dilated airways cannot effectively clear the thick secretions, bacterial infections are commonly a recurrent problem. As the disease progresses, patients complain of worsening shortness of breath and occasionally coughing up blood (hemoptysis). The airways can become infected with difficult-to-treat bacteria or other pathogens.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Persistent mucus production (often thick and discolored)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Frequent lung infections
  • Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
  • Wheezing or chest tightness
  • Fatigue
  • Unintended weight loss

If you experience worsening respiratory symptoms or frequent infections, contact us to schedule an evaluation.

Bronchiectasis Diagnosis

At Arizona Pulmonary Specialists, we follow a thorough diagnostic process, which may include:

  • Comprehensive medical history and physical exam – Assessing symptoms, risk factors, and past infections
  • Pulmonary function tests (spirometry) – Evaluating lung function and airflow obstruction
  • High-resolution CT scan – Providing detailed imaging to confirm airway damage and widening
  • Sputum culture and blood tests – Identifying bacterial infections or underlying immune deficiencies

Treatment of Bronchiectasis

The goal of treatment is to manage symptoms, prevent recurring infections (also called exacerbations), and improve lung function. We may utilize medications and therapies such as:

  • Inhaled medications – There are a variety of inhaled medications that help improve airway function and prevent infections.
  • Airway clearance techniques – Percussion or vibration devices, postural drainage, and flutter valves can help remove lung secretions.
  • Antibiotic therapy – Inhaled or long-term oral antibiotics (for recurrent infections) can be used to treat or prevent bacterial infections.
  • Anti-inflammatory therapies – Corticosteroids or other medications may be prescribed to reduce airway inflammation.

For severe cases, hospitalization and intravenous (IV) antibiotics may be necessary during exacerbations.

Other Things You Can Do

In addition to medical treatment, lifestyle modifications can help manage bronchiectasis effectively:

  • Hydration – Drinking plenty of fluids helps thin mucus for easier clearance.
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation – Exercise and breathing techniques improve lung function and endurance.
  • Vaccinations – Regular flu and pneumonia vaccines help prevent respiratory infections.
  • Avoiding lung irritants – Smoking cessation and reducing exposure to pollutants can protect lung health.
