What is COPD?
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common lung diseases. It is a progressive lung condition that makes breathing increasingly difficult, and includes two primary diseases:
- Emphysema – Damage to the air sacs in the lungs, reducing oxygen exchange
- Chronic bronchitis – Long-term inflammation of the airways, leading to persistent cough and mucus production
Smoking is the leading cause of COPD, but other risk factors include chronic exposure to dust and pollutants, certain genetic conditions, and, in rare cases, injection drug use.
Symptoms of COPD
COPD symptoms develop gradually and worsen over time. Common signs include:
- Shortness of breath, especially during activity
- Persistent cough with mucus production
- Wheezing or chest tightness
- Fatigue and reduced exercise tolerance
- Swelling in the legs (in later stages)
Exacerbations, or flare-ups, can cause sudden worsening of symptoms, often triggered by infections, air pollution, or smoke exposure. Severe exacerbations may require hospitalization.
Diagnosing COPD
Accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. Our diagnostic process includes:
- Medical history and physical exam – Identifying risk factors and symptoms
- Pulmonary function tests (spirometry) – Measuring lung function and airflow restriction
- Imaging (chest X-ray or CT scan) – Assessing lung damage and ruling out other conditions
Once diagnosed, we develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
COPD Treatment
While COPD is a chronic condition, the right treatment can significantly reduce symptoms, prevent flare-ups, and improve your ability to stay active. Our approach focuses on slowing disease progression, managing symptoms, and enhancing your overall lung function. Treatment options vary based on disease severity and individual needs, and may include:
Smoking Cessation
This is the most critical step in managing COPD. Quitting smoking slows disease progression and improves lung health.
Medications
Inhalers are the first-line treatment to open airways and reduce inflammation:
- Bronchodilators – Relax airway muscles to improve breathing
- Corticosteroids – Reduce inflammation and prevent exacerbations
- Combination inhalers – A mix of bronchodilators and steroids for more advanced cases
During flare-ups, oral steroids, antibiotics, and increased breathing treatments may be needed. If you experience severe shortness of breath and cannot speak in full sentences, seek emergency care immediately.
Oxygen Therapy
If oxygen levels are low, supplemental oxygen is the only treatment proven to improve survival in COPD.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
A structured program combining supervised exercise, breathing techniques, and education to improve lung function and endurance.
Advanced Treatments
For severe cases, surgical options may be considered:
- Lung Volume Reduction Surgery (LVRS) – Removes damaged lung tissue to improve breathing efficiency
- Lung transplant – A last-resort option for end-stage COPD
Preventive Care
Regular flu shots and pneumonia vaccinations are recommended to reduce the risk of respiratory infections.
COPD Research and Clinical Trials
