Lung Cancer Care at Arizona Pulmonary Specialists

As the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, lung cancer is often associated with smoking, but non-smokers can also develop the disease. Early detection is critical, as many patients don’t show symptoms in the initial stages.

At Arizona Pulmonary Specialists, our team of experienced pulmonologists is here to provide comprehensive evaluation, advanced diagnostic testing, and coordinated treatment planning to ensure the best possible care for individuals with lung cancer. Located in Scottsdale, Arizona, we offer state-of-the-art screenings, diagnostics, and treatment coordination to help you navigate your care with confidence.

If you need lung cancer screening or evaluation, contact us today to schedule an appointment.

Understanding Lung Cancer

Lung cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the lungs grow uncontrollably, forming tumors that can spread to other parts of the body if left untreated. There are two main types of lung cancer, which determine treatment options:

  • Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) – The most common form, accounting for about 85% of cases
  • Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) – A less common but aggressive form that typically spreads quickly

Determining the type of lung cancer is essential for developing an effective treatment plan.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer

The symptoms of lung cancer are often very vague. In fact, most early lung cancers are entirely asymptomatic. As the disease progresses, patients may experience:

  • Chronic cough – A persistent cough that worsens over time
  • Coughing up blood – Even in small amounts, this requires immediate evaluation
  • Unexplained weight loss – Often due to changes in metabolism
  • Fatigue and weakness – Caused by the body’s response to cancer
  • Shortness of breath – As tumors grow and block airflow
  • Chest pain – May worsen with deep breathing or coughing

Because these symptoms can overlap with other lung conditions, accurate diagnosis by a specialist is essential.

Lung Cancer Screening and Diagnosis

Lung Cancer Screening

Early detection saves lives. Research shows that low-dose CT (LDCT) scans can significantly reduce lung cancer deaths in high-risk individuals—especially those aged 50-80 with a history of heavy smoking.

At Arizona Pulmonary Specialists, we offer a dedicated lung cancer screening program to catch cancer early, when treatment is most effective.

Diagnostic Tests

If a lung abnormality is detected, further testing is required to confirm a diagnosis:

  • CT scans – Provide detailed imaging to evaluate lung nodules or masses
  • PET scans – Help distinguish cancerous masses from benign growths
  • Bronchoscopy – A minimally invasive procedure to examine the airways and collect tissue samples
  • Needle biopsy – A sample of lung tissue is obtained using imaging guidance
  • Surgical biopsy – Sometimes necessary for a more comprehensive diagnosis
  • Breathing tests – May be conducted as part of your evaluation

There is no way to make an accurate diagnosis of lung cancer without a biopsy. No one should be treated for lung cancer until a biopsy confirms the diagnosis. In Arizona, Valley Fever is a common cause of abnormalities on a chest X-ray or CT scan that can be easily confused with lung cancer.

Your lung doctor will work quickly to make a specific diagnosis and determine the extent (or stage) of your lung cancer. We will then work together with cancer specialists (oncologists, radiation oncologists, and thoracic surgeons) to coordinate your care.

Lung Cancer Treatment

If you are a smoker it is important to stop smoking immediately. Research shows that people who stop smoking do better with treatment that those that continue to smoke. In short, it is not too late to stop smoking!

The best treatment approach depends on several factors, including cancer type, stage, and overall health. Options may include:

Surgery

For early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), surgical removal of the tumor offers the best chance for a cure.

Radiation Therapy

High-energy beams target and destroy cancer cells, often used in combination with surgery or for patients who cannot undergo surgery.

Chemotherapy

Medications are used to shrink tumors and kill cancer cells, often recommended for advanced-stage lung cancer or in combination with other treatments.

Targeted Therapy and Immunotherapy

There are several cutting-edge treatments that offer hope for patients with advanced or recurrent lung cancer:

  • Targeted therapy attacks specific genetic mutations in lung cancer cells.
  • Immunotherapy helps the body’s immune system recognize and fight cancer.
